Raids Against Illegal Migrant Workers Yield First Results

A nationwide campaign is underway across the UK to identify migrants working illegally. The primary focus is on construction sites, where the largest concentration of such workers is believed to be located. It’s important to note that these raids have proven to be quite effective. For instance, last week, London police detained 20 individuals suspected of illegal employment. Among them:

  • 16 had overstayed their visas;
  • One crossed the border illegally;
  • One escaped from a local port;
  • Two arrived in the UK by boat;

A similar case occurred last month, when West Midlands police detained 73 illegal workers.

Law enforcement officials assure the public that raids will continue regularly, as there is a clear need for them to do so.

They also remind employers of their responsibility to verify that employees have the legal right to work in the UK.

What Sanctions Can Employers Receive for Employing Migrants?

According to UK law, any business that illegally employs a worker can be fined up to £60,000 per employee. In addition, the employer may lose their position and face up to five years in prison.

Director of Enforcement, Compliance and Crime, Eddy Montgomery, said: “Our dedicated Immigration Enforcement officers have been ramping up action to disable illegal working across the board. This targeted action is on top of ongoing work across the country to disrupt people flouting the rules across different sectors.”
