Energy storage projects receive OFGEM support
OFGEM has published a list of energy storage projects that it intends to support through the cap and floor scheme, launching a new round of public consultation. The 16 proposed projects will provide a total of 7,465 MW of long-duration storage capacity. However, what are these projects, and how will they influence the UK construction industry?

Which projects will receive support?
The report provides support for three pumped-storage hydropower projects. It`s Loch Kemp Storage, Coire Glas, and Earba in northern Scotland, with storage capacities of 660 MW, 1,440 MW, and 1,800 MW respectively.
In north-east England, OFGEM has approved TeesCAES. This is a compressed storage system with a capacity of 50 MW. In Wales, Frontier Legacy, a vanadium-zinc battery energy storage system has being created. It will provide 65 MW of storage capacity.
The remainder of the list consists of lithium-ion battery storage systems with capacities ranging from 100 MW to 500 MW. Most of which are designed to provide approximately 400 MW. These include Field Netherton, Field New Deer, Field Rigifa, and Field Fyrish in northern Scotland, as well as Field Long Stratton, East Claydon Storage, Ocker Hill BESS, Sundon Storage, Drakelow (Innova), Springwell, and Thornton BESS 2 in England.
How will the development of energy storage infrastructure influence the construction industry in the future?
The expansion of storage infrastructure is expected to have a positive impact on the UK construction industry. As more storage facilities are developed, companies will become less vulnerable to supply disruptions, rising energy prices, and other external factors. In addition, the construction of this infrastructure will increase demand for construction services and related industries.
Fencyx, as one of the leading wholesale suppliers in the UK, supports this initiative. We hope that the programme will continue to expand and that even more energy storage projects will be developed in the future.
