BBA certifies a new low-carbon brick
The British Board of Agreement has certified a new type of brick. It is produced from low-carbon materials and can be recycled. But what is so special about this brick, and how may it influence the building industry?

Current state of low-carbon brick production
A Scottish manufacturer, Kenoteq, will produce a new type of brick. The company used construction and demolition waste as raw materials. Company officials said that its product may have many uses, from facades and feature walls to brick plinths. More than a decade of research and development at Heriot-Watt University preceded the creation of a new low-carbon brick.
Now, Kenoteq is finally adjusting production processes and is prepared to launch a large-scale production. It plans to produce at least 2 million bricks per year, with the possibility of increasing the production rate to 4 million bricks per year.
How will it influence the building industry?
The beginning production of a new low-carbon brick will have a lot of positive benefits. Firstly, it helps to solve the construction and demolition waste problem. The next it helps to solve the problem of CO2 emissions. For example, building a standard house in the UK requires 12,000 bricks, which produce nearly 5,5 tons of CO2 emissions. By using a new low-carbon brick, it`s possible to reduce emissions to 0,2 tons. Also, the manufacturing of new low-carbon bricks creates new workplaces and increases the variety of building materials in the British market.
Sam Chapman, co-founder and executive director of Kenoteq, said: “The K-Briq is not just an environmentally superior alternative to traditional bricks, but a technically robust building material suitable for a wide range of construction applications. With our certification secured, we can scale up production to meet market requirements while maintaining the exceptional quality and sustainability credentials that set us apart.”
Fencyx, as one of the leaders in the UK building industry, is happy that such projects continue to develop. It is our goal to support the building industry as eco-friendly as possible.
