London Mayor May Review Green Belt Restrictions

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that he may review green belt restrictions. He said the current regulation causes many problems, including slowing building development. But is that situation so bad, and what changed by reviewing these rules?

The reason for that decision

The City Hall of London decided to review green belt restrictions mainly because of a shortage of living space. In many cities, there are many people in London who do not have their own apartments. By changing the status of some plants, we can build an apartment for a hundred thousand London citizens. The new houses must be built on low-quality, hard-to-reach land near the railroad stations. Also, a new building project must include different forms of biodiversity, such as parks and squares.

How will the London mayor’s decision influence the building industry?

Generally, the decision to review the green belt policy will bring positive changes for London and the UK building industry. First of all, the allocation of new plants allows for the acceleration of the building process and makes the houses more available for citizens. Also, it gives the possibility to exploit low-quality land, and instead keep high-quality plants for agriculture or other things. The necessity of creating different green locations, like parks and squares, will be accounted for development of new projects.

Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner commented: “We cannot end the housing crisis and build the 1.5 million homes we need without London being ambitious in its approach. That’s why the government welcomes the bold proposal announced by the mayor today, which raises the challenge of tackling London’s housing crisis. The mayor of London has our backing to deliver the housing this city needs, in line with our ambition nationally to unlock the dream of a secure home for a generation.”

The negative sides are also possible. The main afraid of this situation is that environmental requirements will not be counted, and new urban areas will not have enough green zones.

Fencyx, as one of the leaders of the UK building industry, positively relies on the London green belt changes. It simplifies the activity of building companies and helps to solve the building crisis. However, it is necessary to account for all environmental requirements to keep the urban-nature balance.
