New challenges before reaching UK 2030 net zero target
The UK Climate Change Committee made a report for the government about the UK 2030 net zero target. His report is relatively negative because, at such rates, Great Britain cannot achieve its eco goal by 2030. So, the British government must take immediate action to correct the situation.
The main source: Three million heat pumps needed in next five years
What has already been made to achieve net zero target
According to the report, for today, the UK has taken the following steps:
- Decreased by half CO2 emission in comparison to 1990.
- Introducing a new green energy program, including installing solar panels, wind generation stations, and heat pumps.
- Increasing amount of planted trees and restoration of peatlands.
The report also notes that refusing fossil fuels, like coal, oil, etc., positively influences the environment, so the committee recommends continuing this policy.
What needs to be made yet to achieve this goal
Government recommendations consist of 10 notes, the main of which are:
- The development of green energy, especially the installation of solar panels and heat pumps in private houses.
- Decreasing the electricity price.
- An increasing amount of electro cars (by 2030, the UK government plans that 100% of cars will be electro-driven)
- Continuation of the environmental policy of planting trees and restoration of peat deposits
Piers Forster, interim chair of the Climate Change Committee, said: “The country’s 2030 emissions reduction target is at risk. The new government has an opportunity to course-correct, but it will need to be done as a matter of urgency to make up for lost time. They are off to a good start. Action needs to extend beyond electricity, with rapid progress needed on electric cars, heat pumps, and tree planting. The transition to net zero can deliver investment, lower bills, and energy security. It will help the UK keep its place on the world stage. It is a way for this government to serve both the people of today and the people of tomorrow.”
